Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District
The Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District (IGLSD) serves several communities in the Northwest Iowa area. Comprised of 49 lift stations and a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), the district services an area of of 12,000 acres.
In 2017, the district was looking to replace and modify its operations. Specifically, IGLSD wanted a prime contractor to retrofit its existing lift stations with new Allen-Bradley Program Logic Controllers (PLCs), replace its existing collections system and SCADA systems and move from radio to Ethernet communication.
IGLSD treats municipal wastewater from several communities around the Iowa Great Lakes, including Arnolds Park, Okoboji, Milford, Orleans, Spirit Lake, West Okoboji, Wahpeton and many unincorporated areas around the Great Lakes.
As prime contractor, PRIMEX® retrofitted 49 different lift stations across the district with Allen-Bradley CompactLogix PLCs. PRIMEX also removed and replaced the PLCs and I/O cards at the WWTP main SCADA control panel with an Allen-Bradley ControlLogix PLC.
PRIMEX also facilitated combining the separate wastewater plant and lift station WonderWare software programs into one common WonderWare System Platform software package, installing related hardware as indicated in the project specifications.
As IGLSD’s prime contractor, PRIMEX increased our onsite presence from the standpoint of multiple reviews of submittal packages prior to providing the finished product. The process was highly interactive throughout, leading to a strong relationship with the client.
PRIMEX switched the communication style from radio to Ethernet to improve the reliability of the district. The communication upgrade represented a large piece of what made this project successful for IGLSD and PRIMEX.
